Everything You Need To Know About Tortuga Music Festival

Here I am a week later and i'm still recovering/having post Tortuga withdrawals. I can honestly say that it was one of my favorite weekends that I have ever had in my life.

Tortuga Music Festival just concluded its sixth year. It is usually held the first weekend of April and is three days long (Fri-Sun). It is held in Ft Lauderdale, Florida directly on the beach. So needless to say, I STILL have sand everywhere.

When the lineup first came out in November I knew it was a festival I couldn't miss. Florida Georgia Line, Keith Urban, and Eric Church were the headliners and I have a love for all three. So I hit up my girl Mary Lou and before we knew it, we were on a plane. We booked out hotel late so we weren't able to stay directly on the beach which honestly was a pain. We stayed at The Link and for the price, it wasn't terrible. It was a bit run down for my liking but the rooms were nice. Check in was a nightmare after their wifi went down and their "breakfast" was cereal or a bagel. So I wasn't impressed. It was around $8 one way for an Uber (use my code: xbij9 for $5 off your first ride) to the festival, which added up after four days. After the festival was over it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a ride back and we had to wait/walk far away to get one to even be able to come get us. My advice: spend the extra cash and get something close. It evens out in the end.

Before the festival we stopped at Rock Bar where they had giant 2 for 1 mixed drinks. They added up to be a little over $20 each. Which wasn't bad based on how huge they are. They also have the BEST quesadilla you'll ever have. We ended up going back for one the next day too. Be aware that they do add a 15% gratuity on your bill....they made a lot of extra money off us the first night. Another bar we loved was The Elbo Room. It has been around since 1938 and is known from the movie "Where The Boys Are" that came out in the 60s. Its run down, its cash only, its everything you would want it to be and more. Also, during Tortuga there is a group that will show up at 8am to start drinking. They are rightfully named "The Breakfast Club" and were an absolute hoot to hang out with and we will be joining them next year.

Inside the gates of Tortuga were two stages. The Sunset Stage and The Main Stage. I loved the option of having multiple stages with different acts, however, they are set far apart so trekking around in the sand wasn't the easiest. Corona, Titos, Barefoot and Malibu were the drink sponsors. For a tall Corona it ran you $13. I thought it wasn't that bad of a price. But I would much rather hang out in the Malibu tent and spend a bit more for rum. Plus they had limbo, corn hole and other games where you  could win tokens to trade for drinks and other Malibu merch. We ended up with a free drink to split and popsockets. Next year I plan on hanging out more in this area.

Every act was incredible. You could see the happiness and excitement when the crowd would sing back to them. Thats what I love about the country community. We don't mess around. We support and learn lyrics to just about everything that any artist puts out. My favorite moment was witnessing a proposal right behind us during Dan + Shay. Everyone was in tears and screaming for joy. It was absolutely beautiful. We later saw them the next day and they said that their first concert together was Dan + Shay so it made the moment so much more special.

Now I will warn you, this festival holds THOUSANDS....around 10,000 people. It gets crazy. So if you can't handle crowds, this won't be the best for you. Unless you are the #FrontRowOrGoHome type of person. If you are, be prepared to run when the gates open. My friend Katie got in line at 6am to get the best spot but couldn't run as fast as others and ended up a row behind. Also be aware that people will drink....ALOT. Your towel will get stepped on, you will get pushed, just keep your cool and enjoy the music. Don't try to be the person to push your way to the front either, I witnessed three fights from people trying to do just that. Also please pace yourself. We learned the hard way, after being in the sun for too long, and ended up not remembering much of the first night. Opps.

Overall this is THE FESTIVAL of the year. Perfect time of the year to get away and enjoy the sun, get sand in your toes and sway to country music. Plus it goes to a great cause. Tortuga works with Rock the Ocean, which helps raise funds for ocean conservation. So help save the turtles y'all! Can't wait for next year! Hope to see you all there!
